The social service has been working in the institution since 1997 and works as a gateway for the registration and reception of the onco-hematological patients referred to the house. The sector has an inclusive, interventional and educational character, focusing on the curative process of the patient and monitoring of the family group, with regard to social issues, family structure and socioeconomic issues
Main activities carried out by Social Service:
Implemented in the House in 1998, the Psychology service has been developing ever since a work focused on humanization of chronic onco-hematological patient care and its family, so as to enable the minimization of stress caused by the disease and a better understanding of the moment, facilitating the treatment adherence. Focusing on the patient's quality of life, during and after treatment, the sector performs the following activities:
The nutrition sector offers individual and collective nutritional assistance to patients and families benefiting from the institution. Casa Durval Paiva has a food and nutrition unit where daily meals are produced with the quality and food safety that the public we serve needs. We also have individual outpatient care, where we carry out nutritional monitoring of children. In addition, together with the pedagogical sector, we have developed the "Educando para Nutrir" Project, whose main objective is to motivate children with cancer or hematological diseases to acquire a healthy eating habit aiming at a better quality of life.
The dental sector of Casa Durval Paiva was implanted in November 1998 with the purpose of attending children and adolescents with cancer and chronic hematological diseases, as well as their companions. The service offers better oral health conditions through preventive, educational and curative care.
Dental prevention in pediatric patients with cancer is of great importance because oral manifestations of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy of the head and neck may occur, such as: mucositis (inflammation of the oral mucosa), xerostomia (dry mouth), gingival bleeding, palate change, caries of radiation, candidiasis, in addition to lip herpes.
Mucositis is the most common oral manifestation in children with cancer. It affects not only the mouth but also the entire gastrointestinal tract up to the rectum, causing a lot of pain, fever, difficulty speaking, eating, swallowing, leaving the patient longer hospitalized, delaying his chemotherapy protocol and making the treatment more expensive, since he will spend more time hospitalized which can even lead to death. It is of utmost importance the relationship between the dentist and the oncologists so that preventive and curative measures are instituted soon after the diagnosis of the disease.
The sector also develops the "Educação e Sorriso" project together with the pedagogy sector. It motivates children with cancer and hematological diseases to acquire healthy oral hygiene habits, demystifying the "villain" figure of the dental surgeon, leaving the patient closer to the professional, and educating them to consume a healthy diet, using the computer science as a pedagogical tool in the promotion of oral health, through educational websites and software.
The Casa de Apoio à Criança com Câncer Durval Paiva develops several actions aimed at children and adolescents, based on the well-being of patients and their inclusion in society. The Institution attaches particular importance to education and makes possible through the work developed by the education sector the promotion of integral development of children and adolescents of different age groups, in the perspective of minimizing educational losses due to difficulties in accessing to school or by total/partial school leaving due to cancer treatment.
The pedagogical service at the institution has started in 1998 as an initiative to promote play activities and school reinforcement for children and adolescents assisted, initially conducted by the volunteer service. In 2001, the service was officially signed by the Secretaria Estadual de Educação e Cultura do RN (SEEC-RN) through the Subcoordenadoria de Educação Especial (SUESP-RN) and in 2010, with the implementation of the Núcleo de Atendimento Educacional Hospitalar e Domiciliar do RN (NAEHD / SUESP), the House became the first partner institution to offer simultaneously the pedagogical servisse, both hospital and domicile in the State.
In these settings, educational accompanimentallows patients to continue their studies supported by the laws governing special education. The method of teaching aims to fulfill and organize strategies that allow the continuity of the schooling process in order to facilitate the development and construction of students' knowledge, even if they do not have the common means, such as in regular schools.
The activities developed in the class have as main contribution the playful bias, in order to contribute with greater meaning in the learning development of the assisted children and adolescents. In this way, daily activities composed of several facilitating resources are developed, such as: plastic arts, music, body expression, literature, drawing, nutrition education, oral health education, cinema, interdisciplinary thematic pedagogical projects integrated to the school contents worked, besides the individualized educational accompaniment.
Objectives of the Pedagogical Sector:
The physiotherapy sector at Casa Durval Paiva was inaugurated in April 2008 and had its entire project funded through a partnership with the Rotary Club Natal Alecrim. The purpose of this service is to treat children and adolescents with cancer and chronic hematological diseases who have musculoskeletal and functional sequelae and require some form of physical rehabilitation. For this, the physiotherapy sector has furniture, utensils, equipment and a professional capable of acting with focus on the patient's well-being and quality of life, through exercises and specific techniques to promote functional independence, physical integrity maintenance and improvement of some parameters such as pain; restriction of joint range of motion; decreased muscle strength; changes in motor coordination, balance, posture, respiratory pattern and physical conditioning.
This space offers activities that aim to empower patients' mothers/companions in elaboration of handicrafts of the regional culture, encouraging them in the production and commercialization of the ready-made products. The room provides a space for interaction, integration and socialization, because in addition to exercise the practice of crafts, it is the moment in which they interact with each other and end up realizing that all are going through the same difficulties. The mothers / companions find in this space a place of refuge, where they can forget the problems, as well as learn a new craft. In the arts sector every month a new technique of craftsmanship is taught, showing art as a therapeutic path, making this route a facilitator for creativity, which causes the mothers/companions to go through various experiences and consequently pass by a process of self-knowledge. In this way, the sector helps in qualifying, learning a new job, but it is also a way of giving these families a new way of generating a source of income, offering them the opportunity to be protagonists of their destinies.
The computer lab has the role of introducing users of Casa Durval Paiva into a new reality, the digital era. With the children, the work developed is in a multidisciplinary way in partnership with the pedagogical sector and with the projects "Educação e Sorriso" (Dentistry Sector) and "Educando para Nutrir" (Nutrition Sector). With teenagers, parents and caregivers, the focus is to enable them through basic courses such as: Windows, Word, Microsoft-certified online courses provided by the Institution, and pass the knowledge about the internet and its importance today. All this, with the focus to insert them in the labor market and to build a new perspective and quality of life.
The Donation Center has existed since 1997 and today has a team of almost 50 professionals. The work developed is of fundamental importance for Casa Durval Paiva, as it is responsible for raising funds which maintains the Institution.

Seeking to offer a further service to its target audience, Casa Durval Paiva created in January 2009 a medicines dispensary in the Institution. The service aims to provide pharmaceutical assistance and adjuvant medications to the onco-hematological treatment completely free of charge to children and teenagers assisted by the institution. The pharmaceutical care is performed by a specialized professional who, in addition to making medicines available, facilitates the understanding of the necessary treatment information so that the adherence to the process is safe and effective.Together with the other professionals of the House, the sector has been working with the awareness that caring for a child with cancer requires a totally interdisciplinary approach so that is possible to provide comprehensive care, having as central concern the preservation of their quality of life.
When we receive any diagnosis, we know that many aspects are affected and modified, and in the case of children and adolescents in treatment of cancer and hematological diseases, it is necessary to consider that physical, cognitive, emotional and social factors may have been affected or committed. In the Casa de Apoio à Criança com Câncer Durval Paiva, the occupational therapy activity is to promote health recovery and promote well-being during the treatment phase, promoting increased self-esteem, and patient safety and motivation.
Through the therapist-patient-activity relation, occupational therapy facilitates the organization of day-to-day activities of both the patient and his/her relatives, as well as helps to discover and develop resources that allow the continuity of their daily lives despite illness or hospitalization, as well as offers the auriculotherapy technique, in order to maintain the quality of life from physical to mental aspects, being a service offered to patients, families and collaborators of the institution.Occupational therapy intervention can occur at any stage of the treatment through a holistic view, observing all the aspects that involve the human being, seeking to find ways to achieve autonomy, independence and so that they can make full use of their potential, considering the uniqueness of each patient and achieving a more humanized treatment.
Since 2002, Casa Durval Paiva has been developing actions in favor of the early diagnosis of childhood cancer, and in 2020 it implanted a specific sector to plan, monitor and execute educational activities on childhood cancer with in order to increase the cure rate of childhood cancer.
The CDP Early Diagnosis sector has been pursuing strategies to establish partnerships that contribute and collaborate with the dissemination of essential information to the process of diagnosing childhood cancer, from the stage of demystifying, through clear and transparent communication, characteristics of childhood and adolescent cancer, as well as entering into more technical and specialized themes on the subject, and also crossing the barriers that exist in the trajectory between the initial symptoms until the diagnosis of the disease. This is a long walk to go!
Such partnerships aim to promote awareness actions for education professionals and parents of students, as well as society in general; training actions for professionals working in primary health care; in addition to seeking to raise awareness among the population through the dissemination of qualified information about the signs and symptoms of childhood and juvenile cancer. In this way, everyone, legal or physical, entities representing class, private institutions or public bodies can join this noble cause of responsibility of the whole society.
It is noteworthy that, if diagnosed early, children and adolescents can anticipate treatment and provide a greater chance of cure for these patients. Our gift is the cure! And saving lives is our biggest reason for action!
